Earthquakes, Typhoons and Volcanoes! Oh My!

Having lived in California , I’m used to earthquakes (like the one at 6am this past Sunday when I woke up thinking, “why does it feel like the bed is moving?” It was apparently a 5.8 quake off the coast of northeastern Japan .) but I don’t think I’ve ever lived so close to an active volcano. I guess people on the Big Island of Hawaii and pretty used to it and granted, in California , we have earthquakes, mud slides, wild fires, natural disasters galore.  But  Mount Asama erupted this early this morning. Mount Asama is about 90 miles outside of Tokyo. That seems pretty close to a major metropolitan city if you ask me. The news reported that several areas including Yokohama were covered in a thin layer of volcanic ash. If I had seen a thin layer of white dust outside our apartment this morning I might have thought it was snow…  Mt Asama last erupted in 2004.

Mount Fuji is a dormant volcano and there are apparently many other volcanoes around Japan .

I guess that’s the joy of living in the “Ring of Fire” Now let’s hope we don’t reenact that horrible movie “Volcano” where a volcano erupted in the middle of LA. Now I can’t wait for the typhoons in spring.
