Beer Foam

I’m not a big fan of “head” on my beer.  But the Japanese are taught that the foam on a beer” protects it? so it tastes better?  In any case, there is always just too much “head” on my beer.  This “head” system would probably work ok, if they followed the European style where they guarantee that you get the exact amount of beer that you pay for.  For example, all beer glasses in Europe have a line for 350mLs or 0.5L etc.  But this isn’t the case in Japan, there’s no standardized line on the glass.

Here’s a picture of my friend Andy and our Yebisu Stout Drafts.  He’s learned to order his beer “awanashi” (泡なし no foam).   Having seen how much beer I’ve been losing, I’ve now immediately learned this word.

As a side Japanese lesson… The -nashi suffix of the word combined with some nouns means “lack of” or “without”.  So, if you’re vegetarian, it’ll be nikku-nashi (肉なし)
